Frontside and backside 180 ollies.

Street fundamentals that lie at the heart of many of skateboardings’ more technical moves. After you’ve learned straight ollies this should be your next step. It’s no good trying to run before you can walk. Cue yawns.

Okay, fair enough, I know that you’re all eager to learn as fast as possible, but if you miss out on the basics then you’ll lose out in the long run.

The technique required obviously varies depending on whether you are going frontside or backside. I can only usher you into trying. Skateboarding is not easy. That’s why you’re addicted.

Okay. Roll with as much speed as you are comfortable with. The technique is basically the same as a straight ollie so have your feet in roughly the same position.

Crouch and pop as you would normally - you need to visualise the process of turning in the air and where you’re aiming to land.

Ollie and turn your shoulders so that you lift upwards whilst turning 90 degrees in your chosen direction. Try to stay above your board and in control. If you just ollie and throw yourself then the chances are you’ll lose your board, controlling the 180 is the key.

At the peak of your ollie you should be just over 90 degrees of the 180 turn. As you begin to come downwards continue turning your shoulders so that your board has turned almost through the full 180. (It’s sort of pointless describing this process in steps as it needs to happen as one fluid motion. Look at the sequence and experiment).

As you hit the floor complete the last fraction of the 180. Some people like to revert their wheels as they land to complete the 180. This applies especially with backside 180 ollies. You’ll have to see which works best for you. There are no rules.
